BARBARA KILPATRICK

Barbara Kilpatrick is an interdisciplinary visual artist who maintains a solo studio practice and also works collaboratively in dance and sound. Each practice, the artist’s studio and the performance theater, informs the other, both in making objects—drawings, photographs, and sculpture—and in creating costume and set. Her solo exhibitions have included installations at Dance Theater Workshop Gallery (now New York Live Arts), St Mark’s Church, The Kitchen, and the New Arts Program in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. In 2012, Kilpatrick’s work Bearskin, a performance for puppets and movement artists, was presented at FIAF (French Institute / Alliance Française). Her work has also been included in group shows in museums and galleries, while her photographs have appeared in The New York Times, Dance Magazine, Village Voice, and Time Out New York.

Kilpatrick’s collaboration with dancer-choreographer Vicky Shick and intermedia -sound artist Elise Kermani extends nearly twenty years, recognized in a BESSIE award (New York Dance and Performance Award) for “Outstanding Creative Achievement” in 2003. Kilpatrick’s Keep-Sake, a performance for camera and imagined audience, was shown as an installation at the Ancram Opera House (Ancram, New York) in 2008, with sound design and video editing by Kermani. Internationally, Kilpatrick, Shick and Kermani presented Glimpse at the Trafo Theatre in Budapest in 2009 and were guest artists in The Dublin Dance Festival in 2010, Kilpatrick’s work has been supported by the New York Foundation for the Arts SOS Grants, and, with Shick and Kermani, by the MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and from the Cill Rialaig Artist’s Residency in Ballinskelligs, Ireland.
